Whetstone Parish Church

A plan to illuminate St Peters Church Whetstone as part of the millennium celebrations has come to fruition.

The cost of the project has been met, partly by the Church Floodlighting Trust and partly by subscriptions from parishioners and others.

As many of the donations are in memory of relations , the Rev Vic Goodman explained
"There will be a list of those who have donated (or in whose memory a donation has been made) the list will be on display in church."

"The important thing about the donations is that each person who has given in memory of a loved one will only have to look across at the church each evening to be reminded of the departed, a lot of people seem to find comfort in this" he said.

Whetstone Parish Council have kindly agreed to cover the maintenance costs for the first year.

...the prettiest village ....

Neil Pegg writes:

This poem was  told to my farther 70 years ago and to my daughter last month.  It may be old fashioned sentimentality but it is as much a part of the village as the modern landscape:

Whetstone, O Whetstone - the place of my birth.
The prettiest village God placed on this earth.
There`s New Row, Smack Ally, Pig Lane and the Nook
And a nice little walk by the babbling brook
.

St Peter's Church, Whetstone

Priest: Revd Vic Goodman

Revd Goodman writes:

The main service of the week is the Parish Communion at 10.00 on Sundays. This takes the form of a Family Communion on the 1st Sunday in most months. There is an 0800 on the 1st Sunday of the month, and a Wednesday Communion at 09.15. Our Junior Church (Sunday School) takes place from 09.45 until 11.00 on Sundays. This begins in the Parish Centre (old school) and move into church during the distribution of communion. Again, the exception is the 1st Sunday, when everyone joins in for the whole service from 10.00 to 11.00. There are occasional evening services.

We have a thriving company of the Church Lad's and Church Girl's Brigade. Up to 80 young people between 5 and 18 meet in the Parish Centre every week on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Activities include a (very successful) company band, who are always interested in hearing from potential CLCGB members who can or would like to play an instrument. Details from Revd. Vic Goodman 0116 284 8713 or Mrs N Lawrence 0116 286 7655

We also have an equally thriving Wednesday Luncheon Club in the Parish Centre, providing a 3-course meal for around 40 people each week at a very moderate cost. Once again, we would welcome anyone looking for somewhere to eat out any Wednesday. Contact Revd VTG or Mrs Norman Lawrence as above.
